sculpting online experiences
Inspired by Brandon's A Follow Up to: Adding a Little Friction to My Computing (blog deleted)

Sculpt your online experience how you want to. You can reclaim the reins.
I suspect your smartphone is not the problem just like your computer or being extremely online is not the problem. Similarly, I don't see spending more time having exciting conversations with friends, sharing useful discoveries, and producing creative works as a problem.
You can cherish breaks while preferring healthy relationship-building to guilt-inducing abstinence.
Why free yourself from online commotion you both love and hate when you can learn to be above it? Engage what you care about instead to respect the sovereignty of your own attention.
Something eventually replaces what bad habits you're trying to wean off of. You might as well be an active participant in picking and committing to the replacement.
Information firehoses exist. You can change how you view and handle the firehose.
If you want to read more books, what if you focused your sights on reading over reducing internet time?
Spend less time minimizing unwanted behaviors, which give them power until you relapse. Spend more time maximizing wanted behaviors, which naturally oust evils by starving them of attention.
As powerful as your immediate environmental design is, you can find the simplicity you desire within you.
