twitter feed questions
Inspired by Coleman's I can't believe you're all about to do Twitter all over again (post deleted).
I meant to share a post, but my directed quote replies became lists of open-ended questions for anyone to answer. Let's dive right in:
social media spaces
- What do you find good about social media, your feed, and platforms like Twitter, Bluesky, and others in both the past and present?
- If nothing, how are other spaces better?
- If no space suffices, how are you helping to construct sufficient spaces?
bad feed ux
It's bad because "the Feed" is a bad UX. Not feeds as such, but rather The Feed. Your feed. It doesn't matter who you follow, and it doesn't matter what's trending. It doesn't matter whether it's algorithmic or sorted by timestamp. And it doesn't matter how many characters they let you type in the boxes, or what they call favs or posts. And I don't care if you're mostly in DMs (but good for you, fwiw).
- Why is your feed a bad user experience no matter what you do?
- What are you using your feed for? Connection, learning, discovery, or even passing the time?
- How does your feed help you outside of itself?
- Have you tried visualizing or constructing your dream feed?
- What creative behaviors can you perform to improve your feed or interactions with it?
- What specific online or offline alternatives are best for people who find their feed more harmful than helpful?
engagement means snarkiness
Farming engagement for favs and retweets requires you to be mean and snarky.
- Can you showcase relatable, easy-to-understand examples of both this rule and its exception?
- What steps do people take to farm engagement without being mean and snarky?
- Have you tried mimicking them to validate their claims?
fun is bad
I was there for Weird Twitter and whatever the pre-Influencer Instagram was. And it was a lot of fun, but like a lot of fun things it's bad for you. It brings out the worst in you. Farming engagement for favs and retweets requires you to be mean and snarky.
- As someone not aware of those eras, what were Weird Twitter and pre-influencer Instagram like?
- Do fun things bring out the worst in you per se?
- Do you interact with fun things in ways that bring out the worst in you?
- How do your interactions with fun things bring out the best in you?
efficient writing media
If you're a writer, social media is a bad place for your writing. Tweets are writing, after all. Any effort you put into them is better spent elsewhere.
- If tweets are writing after all, why would social media be a bad place for your writing?
- Why is time spent writing outside of social media better?
- Can you imagine purposes where writing on social media is your best option?
Do what you gotta do to let people know where the show is, where to buy your stuff, or how to meet up, but keep it limited.
- What if those are broadcasted best on Twitter or similar spaces?
