my first visit
Obscoru opened I Finally Posted with these words:
I've enjoyed reading blogs on Bear for the last couple of months now and have been thinking about starting my own.
They made me curious about when I started reading blogs here for the first time. Even though I started this blog in the middle of 2024, I knew I first stumbled upon others well before then.
A cursory search showed that I was reading Tiramisu's posts in February of that year. As for how I found his blog, it was likely through Joel's "Posts from blogs I follow around the net" openring list above his footer, which remains there to this day. If we treat that as my first experience of the platform, it took me several months to get started myself.
It's been so long since my first post, post limbo, that I've forgotten whether I ruminated or overthought it. Whether I did or not, I'm pleased with how far I have come. Although, seeing seven sections jam-packed into a single post makes me think that separating them out would have served people better.
Obscoru said that they themed their blog and dashboard before posting. That makes me think about how much more important having anything published is over achieving the visual design of your dreams. As much as first impressions matter, many of us congregate here primarily to write and secondarily to read. Thus, my thought is that the earlier you start consistently shipping your writing, the more chances your visual design choices have to shine.
Think about other hobbies and pastimes that require material goods to partake in. You can obtain or purchase the fancy, stylish, and expensive gear once you have committed to the bit. It can be a justified reward that avoids the failure mode of splurging on an activity you may not even pursue.
Obscoru continued:
I still have no idea what this blog will be, but I could spend forever thinking instead of starting.
A potential reframe could be spending your thinking by starting. Invest your thoughts into your personal website, blog, or other virtual space such that it may blossom beyond your wildest dreams. That creates space for other related thoughts, digressions, or novelties to bloom within your brain. May you perpetuate this cycle for however long you wish to.
As for what anyone's expressive adventure holds, perhaps the fun is in seeing how emergent the journey is. I'm certain that there are posts, topics, and ideas that I would have never entertained if not for starting out here. A little openness to experience goes a long way.
