Imperfect

multiple independent discovery

People covet originality to the point of kneecapping their execution. Yet, many historical discoveries were proposed by multiple actors, whether simultaneously or at different times altogether.

For example: take the historical figures Aristarchus of Samos of Ancient Greece and Nicolaus Copernicus of the Renaissance. Despite living over one and a half millennia apart from each other, they independently developed the heliocentric model of the universe. It placed the Sun at the center of the universe instead of the Earth.

Your voice, point of view, and experience makes your work not only your own, but distinct from others. It's not about whether you use a hammer, trope, or other tool. It's about how you use or adapt that tool to your needs. You can repeat yourself or reinvent the wheel in ways that yield great rewards. Many ideas thought of prior, whether publicly proclaimed or not, can still be pursued if you find them true to you. How can you guarantee any idea is original without access to the total mindshare of every soul in history, dead or alive?
