For me, the gist of Aywren's On Engagement: Blogging vs. Video - Aywren's Nook is that you can go where your people are logged in and ready to seamlessly engage with you.
What's fun is that you can balance that with remaining in slower spaces you already inhabit, like the one you're currently reading these words through. Different mediums can be mutually beneficial instead of fundamentally incompatible. Your blogs can be augmented by your social media presences and vice versa. Your outlets can also be augmented by others' outlets and vice versa.
As for concerns about privacy or other downsides of more popular platforms, the tradeoffs could be worthwhile for you. How much more meaningful rapport and reciprocation can you cultivate within them compared to your current platforms? While you may have a different opinion or value judgment on the subject, I feel like the realizable potential of increased friendly behavior outweighs the costs involved.
For example, consider one of Aywren's findings from her article. One video of hers surpassing the number of comments on her blog for the past year is not only a stellar outcome, but substantial information to work with. Social media can address connective desires while blogs and other artifacts can address other kinds. No, she doesn't have to drop everything else and double down on making videos if she doesn't want to. She can enjoy fruits of her labor that taste differently while allocating her labor as she sees fit.
Sometimes it's worthwhile to just try things you never expected to. But maybe you're happy where you are with no desire to branch out. Whether that's the case or not, here's an idea. Offering more and/or easier communication methods can make cultivating connections with people that care about you and your work easier. I feel like the less people have to sign up and log into accounts they otherwise wouldn't have to engage with you, the better.
Maybe social media engagement scares you with how quickly it gets washed away? Well, if you encourage curation within people around you by practicing it yourself, you can help preempt the loss or forgetting of media and reactions to it. The world needs more archivists as it stands anyway.
