metaversion and metabundance
In What's the name for when art is only about itself?, Pyroclastica asked:
does anyone else have an extreme aversion to when art becomes self-referential? There must be a name for this phenomenon, I know for sure this cannot possibly be an original thought.
Taking this opportunity to coin the portmanteau, metaversion, combining the words "meta" and "aversion". May this term and the emotional state it describes serve you well as you trudge through however many instances of meta discourses to come.
The thing is, as the featured article indicates, so many artistic expressions can become self-referential. Forget the obvious writing about writing that dominates landscapes like this one for a moment. Think about how much music about music, comedy about comedy, and games about games must exist even beyond your awareness. Even quilts about quilts exist of all things.
What do you think the optimal quantity or intensity of metaversion is given this metabundance?
