Imperfect

meaningful learning metrics

Becky's It's Beginning to Look Like a Shitshow starts:

A touch melodramatic perhaps, but today seems to be a bit of a mess. Youngest is off sick with a sore throat, cough and general fatigue. It's the first day he's had off since starting high school and he was really upset that he's broken his 100% attendance streak. It frustrates me no end that schools place such a high emphasis on this - 97% or 98% sure, but 100% is nigh on impossible to achieve. My eldest did manage it in Year 7 (and got zero acknowledgment!), but he was lucky not to have had a single day of being unwell.

I think Matt's conclusion from your degree ain't worth the paper it's printed on applies just as well to attendance as it does grades:

So no, this isn't me telling you not to go to University, it's me telling you that if you decide to go, make sure you make the most of the experience rather than focusing on the grades, because the grades don't matter... The experience you gain, connections you make and understanding of different techniques and practices? That will be invaluable.

What other superficial educational metrics do factors like experience, connections, and understanding triumph over?
