Imperfect

mastery's many frames

Inspired by Tala's trying to be everything. will i become nothing?.

Everyone has a different definition of being exceptionally good at everything. How far is it from perfection? Whom or what is the rule to deviate from? How much deviation meets the threshold?

Those questions make me wonder whether mastery can be achieved earlier with lower standards and expectations.

Tala asks:

If I invest my time into various aspects, can I become an expert in all of them?

I don't see why not. Various aspects could be as few as two. Many people out there consider themselves experts on at least two subjects. If they don't bestow upon themselves the honor, it's likely that people around them do in their place. What examples can you dredge from your life?

Infuse that found mastery with other desirable virtues. What stops you from embracing curiosity, mastery, and perseverance together? Derive factors contributing to such states from role models of yours. Visualize, if not emulate, such an archetype that you can step into. Make becoming a curious master an attained reality within your lifetime by never giving up. The more dynamic you make this practice, the more enriching the journey can be. Could employing a reverse approach also help?

I want to write beautifully till I run my own magazine.

Run your own magazine such that you and others may write beautifully within it. For example, clover.poe "is a collaborative blog dedicated to creative works submitted by internet users." Unlike objects in the mirror, realizing your endgames may be closer than they appear.

I want to draw till my pieces are installed in galleries.

Build galleries such that your pieces and others' can be installed within them. If physical versions are infeasible, test drive them on the Internet. While that might start you off smaller with more competition, your costs may very well be lower and the sky's the limit.

I want to understand the intricacies of chemical engineering till I become distinguishable in the industry.

Become distinguishable in the chemical engineering industry while understanding its intricacies. That said, I will admit this can be a tall order. If your end goals are too big to start with, break them down into manageable chunks that you can execute.

Engaging this reversal could also verify how willing you are for otherwise hidden processes that your endgame requires. How much more is there to running your own magazine than just writing beautifully? What about gallery maintenance besides drawing, or reputation besides understanding?

Embrace quickening feedback loops through your desired subjects. Let writing inform reading and vice versa. Expand your scope beyond just your creative efforts. Life's a journey through constantly changing interests. Experience in one field can open the door to other fields you wouldn't have ever accessed otherwise.

Lacking focus could mean that what you want (or how you want to attain it) is still yet to be found. Could switching up your process find hidden digressions that can get you there? Funnily enough, those who are too unfocused can consider themselves or be considered exceptional in a way. Can a sense of levity as such parlay into translating such mastery elsewhere?

Replace mastery in isolation with mastery in abundance. Weave your process through as many disciplines, people, and moments as you can muster. Exercise the muscle such that your capability and others' grows with each passing day.

While mastery can be forged alone, you don't necessarily have to. You can strive for it with the grace of community. History shows the value of collaboration. Ordinary people and geniuses alike can find much value and synergy through teamwork. I suspect that outbound initiatives to build such a robust social support system will help you more than you know.

Practice your pastimes with abundance, dynamism, and synergy. You may just see yourself and those around you become multimodal masters before your very eyes.
