diversify your search
Yunzi posted No one has any hobbies now - or the only 4 types of blog several days back:
Did a search on Bear for 5 of my interests. One of which is my other blog. 4 returned nothing.
1 returned a single other blog - which in fairness is pretty good (no not mine). So is the search working, or does BB simply lack blogs on interests.
Bear seems to consist only of 4 blog types.
- Personal journaling - "I went somewhere and did something"
- Amateur philosophy or self help.
- American politics - largely left leaning
- Tech blogs - often AI
No one reads anything here and I'm honestly considering just stopping posting.
Ava replied with re: no one has any hobbies now / the 4 types of blog. Here's my summary:
- Although Bear's search isn't the greatest, the Discovery feed serves lots of interests.
- Don't judge a post by its title.
- People have more (diverse) hobbies than meets the eye.
- Continue posting what like minds would want to read.
- Finding your people can take longer than you think.
- Larger platforms may serve your more specific niches better than smaller ones.
She ends her piece with the following paragraph:
In general, I wonder what you are trying to achieve with the post. Is it shaming everyone for what they are talking about, as revenge for not caring about your interests (or posts) as much as you'd like? Pity upvotes so you'll stay and not leave? It's not a good impression.
I suspect Yunzi closed up shop in response. Their homepage read:
Due to a nasty unnecessary response to a post in one of my less good moments. No blog for a while.
I figured this interaction would happen. It isn't the first time and won't be the last. Instead of pondering Yunzi's intent, how could I further help them solve their problem beyond the above tips?
Yunzi:
- What are your 5 interests?
- Where can I find your other blog?
- Which of your 5 interests does your other blog serve?
- What single other blog did Bear Blog's search return which you found pretty good?
- What other tools can you try besides Bear Blog's search and even Bear Blog itself to find blogs pertinent to your interests? How many more blog types did you find as a result?
- How much are you posting for your own sake?
- In what ways are you trying to get people reading anything "here", whether that's your blog or the platform it lives within?
- While posting about feeling stuck helps when done tactfully, have you considered posting about what you want to see more of?
In You're Right, Ire takes yet another angle, thanking Yunzi for inspiring her to change her tactics. She also said this, which to me serves as a high note to end on:
I would also like to say that I read some of your posts, I had never seen them before and they are incredibly interesting.
SO please, keep posting.
