brief pillowfort thoughts

I've never used Pillowfort, but Nonbinary Neurodivergent Person's notice about how the indie Tumblr clone Pillowfort is going down inspired some brief thoughts of mine. They aren't really about the platform proper, but I figure retrospectives similar to those touching on Cohost's shutdown would work best from actual users anyway. That said, I can see how my thoughts could help people out, if not in an evergreen fashion... so I figure I should just post them.

Common wishes regarding onsite activity in particular under the Staff: Pillowfort is closing. announcement post include but aren't limited to: having used it more often, having made more friends there, and having supported it more. Those are all activities we can partake in more no matter which platforms and spaces we choose to call home. Those wishes don't have to serve as strictly online calls to action either.

Now is a great time to export and back up your data from independent and/or corporate online platforms. You never know when you or them will be unable to support those procedures. The same reasoning supports participating in archival efforts, like the various methods mentioned in the links above. Same goes for finding and entrenching yourself within viable alternatives in anticipation of seeing the writing on the wall.

I haven't given much thought about how Tumblr-likes could enhance my online experience. Perhaps that's an idea worth exploring.
