ask for clarification
If you're questioning what someone told you for any reason, ask them for clarification.
Someone I know explained how they needed my help with something in several days. I initially misunderstood them, thinking they couldn't get anything done of what they had set out to do.
After some thinking and writing, I decided to ask them for clarification. Asking about what they managed to do showed how they got everything done besides one minor thing they needed my help with. Updating my understanding in minutes over ruminating for hours and days was a precious win.
There's value in hearing what other people are actually saying. The same goes for clarifying with them such that they tell you the full picture.
