Imperfect

art without bounds

Inspired by mrmr's just some thoughts about music.

A blog post for jotting down the thoughts that come into my head while looking at some art. No story, just very random thoughts.

Because that's what art seems to do for me. Some art, at least. It makes my mind wander and the pictures or thoughts pop up.

Visual taste and preference is so personal. Every person in the world likes their own mix of styles. And I love that!

All the forms of visual art, all mediums, every motif or gesture, can provide a different feeling.

Now that I'm getting a bit older, I also feel like the art I'm appreciating the most, is changing. My younger self mostly appreciated paintings. The more vibrant the better. I still like the same art as I did back then. But I feel like the need to look at the more vibrant art styles is ebbing away.

My visual taste is getting softer (and maybe I am too?). The art I like looking at the most now, is art that takes me away in my head. That makes me daydream. That is either (modern) surrealism or generative AI art. Or a mix of AI and traditional modes.

It's very hard to explain, what this kind of art does for me. And I don't know if other people experience this too. But the digital algorithms that make for consistent patterns, combined with motifs that float, just make my head instantly wander. It gives me a feeling of space. It's something no other style of visual art has the power to do...

Which makes me wonder. I know people that just appreciate art 'that is made with 'real' tools'. They don't like AI art, because in their eyes this is 'not real art'. Do they know the feeling I described above? Does art without the use of generative AI give them the same feelings? Or do they just not experience art in that way?

If not, they are missing out! To me, browsing through my AI art collection for just 15 minutes, feels like I had a hot bath, did a long meditation and made a walk in the forest.
