100 random blogs
Inspired by the "Random blogs and posts" feature as discussed in the Bear docs' Neat Bear features page, William's Embracing Randomness, and slmt's On feed curation and blog discovery.
I embarked on a journey through 100 random blogs via Bear Blog's random blog link. My criteria for them and the results of my experiment are as follows:
Post count
- 0 posts (20/100)
- 1-9 posts (55/100)
- 10+ posts (20/100)
- 100+ posts (5/100)
1 in 5 blogs checked had no posts. Three-fourths of blogs had 9 less posts. Only 1 in 20 posts had more than or equal to 100 posts. As someone with 100+ posts, these results make me think that the bar seems pretty low.
Last posted
Blogs without posts weren't included below for obvious reasons.
- 2026 (29/100)
- 2025 (30/100)
- 2024 (6/100)
- 2023 (7/100)
- 2022 (6/100)
- 2021 (1/100)
Almost three-fourths of blogs with 1+ posts were last active as late as 2025. Half that for those in the first 3 months of 2026. That's not too shabby of a result.
Theming
- Picked or customized theme (62/100)
- Default theme (38/100)
Looks like a majority of people picked a pre-made blog theme or customized their own compared to those who kept the default theme.
Contact methods
I define contact methods here as those on-site or accessible via links on-site. Note that I'm not counting guestbooks.
- 1+ contact methods (41/100)
- No contact methods (59/100)
More Bear blogs sharing contact methods would be nice.
Languages used in blogs
Note that I'm counting any blog that uses English in full or for a majority of its content as English.
- English (87/100)
- German (3/100)
- Korean (3/100)
- Chinese (2/100)
- French (2/100)
- Catalan (1/100)
- Czech (1/100)
- Italian (1/100)
- Japanese (1/100)
It's cool seeing blogs in other languages pop up here. That's a lot of English blogs, but it's a strong lingua franca and I think it comes with the territory.
Novelty
Familiar blogs are those I have seen before. Unfamiliar ones are those I haven't before running this experiment.
- Familiar (17/100)
- Unfamiliar (83/100)
I think this goes to show that there's a lot more blogs on this platform than you would expect.
Errors
My journey wasn't all smooth sailing. I encountered these issues with blogs that I couldn't fill out the above criteria for:
- 1 blog presented the error code
SEC_ERROR_EXPIRED_CERTIFICATE. - 1 blog presented the error code
SSL_ERROR_UNRECOGNIZED_NAME_ALERT. - 1 blog was locked behind a password.
